What You Should Know
The unit of currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar(EC$) and pegged to the US$ at an official rate of EC$2.70 to US$1.00
Although English is the only language ever adopted in the island, you might here a few idiomatic phrases such as “Me a com” ( I’m coming) or “foo me pickney”(my child). Learn to Speak our dialect with Joy Lawrence.
Most of the hotels operate on 110volts,60cycles ( like USA and Canada). However, some have 220 volts. Check before plugging in appliances.
Getting to Antigua
A number of airlines serve Antigua either through direct or connecting flights. American Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Continental, Caribbean Airlines, Delta and LIAT are amongst those most frequently used.

If you prefer the seas, the Barbuda Express runs a ferry service between the islands on a regular basis.
Transportation
Taxis are available outside the airport terminal. Most fares are fixed rather than metered and should be decided prior to the trip.
Car Rental is available at the airport. Several agencies have desks at the airport itself. An international credit card or substantial cash deposit is required.
Bikes and Motorcycles are offered by several organizations including ATV’s Remember to stay on surfaced roads, but occasionally you will come across a narrow track and need to take caution.

Antigua is altogether safer than many places in the world today. However, use common sense and take all standard safety precautions. Lock your car and your hotel door when you leave, and don’t leave valuables unattended in your room. Most hotels have safety vaults where you can store your valuables.
Cruise visitors should watch out for pickpockets in crowds and should not leave bags unattended or agree to carry packages for anyone. It is recommended not to walk in the small alleys in the town area, and visitors should not walk alone late at night in deserted areas.
Antigua offers many Internet cafés where you can check your mail, surf the net, and stay in touch with your family and friends. Some of these cafés also offer other facilities like copying, faxing, scanning, burning, downloading, laminating, filming, processing, and making international calls.
