Monica Matthew
Monica Matthew is an Antiguan, who grew up in the Grays-Green Community. She taught for many years at the Greenbay Government School, The Antigua Grammar School and the Ottos Comprehensive School before leaving to teach Home Economics and Nutrition in Tortola.
She then attended New York City Technical College in Brooklyn, NY where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Hospitality Management. Ms. Matthew worked as a chef at the Cellar, a once exclusive restaurant at the World Trade Center. For the past twenty-three years, she has worked at the prestigious Allen Stevenson School in New York, as the Food and Nutrition Director.
Ms. Matthew received the FAI (Food Allergy Initiative) award, whose past recipients have included Lou Rawls and Michael Kennedy.
In recent years Ms. Matthew has developed a great passion for writing. Antigua—especially the Antigua of her childhood—is a rich source of imagery and inspiration for her work. Her writing explores and celebrates Antigua and Barbuda’s people, landscape, culture, language, politics and history.
