Emergency Department: Designed to function as a fully equipped tertiary center that is staffed to care for serious traumas and serve as a regional resource. Bed capacity is 20.
Imaging Services: Our preeminent centralized imaging center features state-of-the-art imaging technologies – advanced MRI, CT, mammography and ultrasound – in a fully integrated digital imaging service.
Pediatrics: Our Pediatric Unit has the capacity for 24 beds
Women and Infants Health: Fifty percent of the entire third floor of MSJMC is dedicated to women and infants health. A Family Birthing Center
will include 4 Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum rooms; a well-baby nursery; Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); and Obstetrics & Gynecology OBGYN Exam Rooms.
Male & Female Medical & Surgical Units: Our Medical & Surgical Unit has a total capacity of 112 beds – Male Medical & Surgical: 28 beds each and Female Medical & Surgical: 28 beds each

ACCESS
- Land: With over 190 parking spaces it is easier to get to the MSJMC. There are separate entrances for visitors, ambulances and goods traffic.
- Air: An approved helicopter pad for onsite air ambulance – This helicopter pad accommodates all sizes of helicopters and is available to facilitate emergency patient arrivals from other islands and ships in the region.
ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCIES
- High efficiency rotary screw chillers for the air conditioning designed to load shed as energy/cooling demand decreases
- Digital thermostat controls that allow the temp range of the various areas to be more closely monitored
- Building management system that can adjust air pressures and temperatures throughout the building to ensure comfort cooling and non wastage of cooling energy
- Fully automatic alarm system that indicates faults on all major systems so they can be rectified ASAP
- Full water treatment plant designed to process all waste water from the hospital and store it for use in watering the landscaping
- Low pressure metal halide ext lighting designed to operate on a photo electric cell so lighting only comes on when demand is required
- High efficiency internal bulbs in all down lighters
- Heat transfer system for heating the hot water from the steam boilers more efficient than electrical element heating
- Recirculation domestic hot water pumps installed so that water does not have to be run for a long time before the hot water appears at the faucet
- 15% tinting on the windows to cut down on solar heat gain in the building and also prevent furniture and fabrics fading and deteriorating
- Double glazing to all windows to cut down on heat/cold and noise transference through the window pane
- Insulation to all external walls to assist in thermal insulation
- High efficiency boilers powered by propane and diesel saving cost to operate compared to electrical type
- Gas cooking lines in the kitchen to cut electricity consumption
- Soft start systems on all heavy equipment so as not to draw too much power on start up
- White roofing sheeting used to reflect direct sunlight and lessen heat gain into the structure
- Insulated walls between all air conditioned and non air conditioned spaces
- Collection of rain water form all roofs which is directed into two 90,000gallon cisterns which is then combined with city water and treated and used in the hospital
- Over 250,000 gallons of water storage capacity
- Bio-degradable chemicals used in the laundry and kitchen dishwasher cleaning that do not harm the environment
GENERAL
- MSJMC is family-centered and include improved accommodation and facilities for families with comfortable seating, internet access and storage in patient rooms and outdoor balconies on each ward.
- Forty-two percent of all rooms are single bed rooms, providing patients and their families with privacy, without compromising staff visibility and patient safety
- Sixty percent of all patient rooms will have views of the ocean and courtyards and gardens will provide children and families with easy access to the landscape’s ‘healing environment’.
- Building has a sprinkler system throughout with backup and alarms that also repeat at the fire station. Approximately 250K gallons of water is stored under the building for fire and general usage.
- The building is designed to Earthquake standard Seismic Zone 4 – Antigua is currently a seismic zone 3.
- The steel roof and support members are designed to withstand 150 MPH sustained wind loading and is also separated from the main building with a concrete floor which is sealed to prevent water ingress in large amounts.
