Projects of Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown

Antigua & Barbuda Waste Recycling Corporation (ABWREC) – ABWREC was initiated as a not-for-profit corporation to promote and develop waste recycling.

ABWREC received funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the UNDP/SGP programme to create a 25 minute educational to be used to promote recycling both within Antigua & Barbuda and in the region.  Since opening, the facility has processed and exported over 9 million plastic bottles, 30,000 plastic crates, 24,000 lead acid batteries and 230,000 lbs of scrap aluminum, copper and steel.  The facility has conducted tours for over 3,000 school children, educating them on waste management best practices and the need for everyone to play a role in keeping our nation clean and environmentally sustainable.  School based recycling programs are now active in 55 schools in Antigua and Barbuda.  The facility employs recovering drug and alcohol addicts in collaboration the Crossroads Rehab Center.

The Recycling Processing Facility in Powell’s Industrial Estate was opened in December 2005. The project involves the collection, processing and export of plastic bottles, aluminum cans, lead acid batteries and used ink jet printer cartridges and toners for recycling. The facility is mostly staffed by recovering drug addicts.

Eye Screening Project – A retinal imaging camera and computer system was purchased and installed at the Brown’s Avenue clinic last year to provide a low cost way for elderly and diabetic citizens to have regular screening for eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

The digital retinal imaging camera and computer system originally located in a health centre was moved to Mount St Johns Medical Centre as a result of the CEOs commitment to the project where it is run by staff optometrist Rtn Jenelle.  As of June 2010, 1600 patients have been screened and hundreds of cases of pathology including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma have been picked up.  The referral base is from health clinics, MSCMC clinics, ER and private physicians, eye care professionals and walk-ins.   The cost to the patient is EC$20 and this money goes towards maintaining the equipment and expanding the project to include more sophisticated eye investigations in the future.

All Rotary clubs share a key mission: to serve their community and those in need throughout the world while promoting high ethical standards. By participating in club service projects, club members learn about their club’s involvement in local and international projects and can volunteer their time and talents where they’re most needed.

Longtime Rotarians agree that involvement is key to getting the most out of membership. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, to be a greeter for weekly club meetings, or to join a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and better understand the work of Rotary
