Cushion Club

The Cushion Club is a reading club for children in Antigua and Barbuda. It’s been in existence since 1997.

Children between the ages of five and sixteen come every Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and 12 noon, during the regular school year, to the Senior Citizen’s Centre in Lower Gambles, Antigua. There, they are read to but are also encouraged to develop their own reading skills and love of reading. Where possible, assistance is given to children who have challenges with their home work and with studying. But it’s mostly a fun environment – including quizzes, games, and field trips – for building vocabulary, imagination, expression, and a general love for the literary arts that can spill over into all areas of their lives.

The Cushion Club is sustained by the contribution of time by a handful of volunteers. There is no fee or registration required and children five years and older are welcomed. We ask only for timely drop off and pick up of children.

The Cushion Club also enjoys a relationship with the Buckley’s Primary school to which it contributes a prize for the best humanities student every term. This prize is sponsored by chief club volunteer Cedric Holder as a way of encouraging excellence in the areas of the literary arts and social sciences. The Club has given to other ventures over the years such as the Wadadli Youth Pen Prize.

As a non profit, the Club also needs help with volunteers and also the contribution of books and games for our activities.
