Antigua Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by William Booth and his wife Catherine, often described as ‘the founder and ‘the army mother respectively. Moved with compassion for the multitudes outside the influence of organised religion in the mid 19th century, William Booth set himself to discover – to quote a phrase which he himself often used – ‘ how to reach the masses with the gospel.’

THE CORE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE SALVATION ARMY:

  • The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church.
  • Its message is based on the Bible.
  • Its ministry is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in his name without discrimination.
  • The Salvation Army is open to all people regardless of colour, race or sex. Before someone can be accepted for membership, he/she must first make commitment to Jesus Christ, attend weekly classes where there are thought more about The Love that Jesus have for them. He/she is then publicly received as a member.
  • Children, age 7 and over, who accept Jesus Christ as Saviour of their lives, with the consent of parents/guardians are accepted into membership as Junior Soldiers. This said child at age 14 may agree to become a senior member, who we refer to as Senior Soldiers.

This image is the ‘trade mark’ of human services work? The Red Shield Service began in 1896. “The message of the shield…tells of a fight on the spiritual battlefield which must last as long as life itself and that God in Christ is a shield to protect and save us to the uttermost.”

The Salvation Army Flag

Blue Blue symbolizes the purity of God.
Red Red represents the blood of Jesus.
Yellow Yellow is the fire of the Holy Spirit.
“Blood and Fire” stands for the shed blood of Jesus and purifying power of the Holy Spirit and The Star represents the fire of the Holy Spirit.
