EcoZone Summer Camp
The EcoZone Summer Camp seeks to bring children into close contact with their environment. This contact is intended to engender a feeling of ‘citizenship to the earth’. As such, the camp’s programmes and themes revolve around the conservation and preservation of our natural resources. For 2010 the camp’s specific focus is Biodiversity. Thus far, campers have been encouraged to understand the importance of taking care of God’s creations. Teaching takes place through a mixture of arts and crafts, field trips, videos, presentations and other activities.
The camp has seen a number of successes, as campers have been exposed to a number of animals that live on the island, and have had the opportunity to see them in their natural habitats. One group, focussed on the Antigua Racer Snake for that week, visited Bird Island with the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) on their signature “Floating Classroom”.
The entire camp, a group of some 125 children, has visited South Coast Horizon where they could experience, first hand, the beauty of a mangrove ecosystem. Soon, those campers will also visit the Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour where they will have a birds-eye view of the Wallings Forest. As their final group field trip, all campers will visit Bird Island on the last Wednesday of camp.
Besides these activities, the campers have been working on several arts and craft projects including making Whistling Ducks, turtles, Snowy Egrets, miniature mangrove, and so on. The camp looks forward to their Arts and Craft Exhibition slated for Friday 23 July, from 1 pm to 3 pm.
